by the people, for the people!
Sunday 1st September 2019
10:00 am to 5:00 pm
Rev Menasche & The Shul Hoppers
You are warmly invited to a wide-ranging and diverse day of Jewish learning and culture at Leytonstone and Wanstead Synagogue inspired by Limmud and adapted in a creative, east London setting. Included in the ticket is a generous cold lunch of filled bagels, cakes and fruit (let us know any dietary requirements). There will also be plenty of tea, coffee and biscuits as we mingle throughout the day.
Leytonstone and Wanstead Synagogue is a reviving, growing community which promotes a culture of knowledge exchange, debate and learning. Through this event, we are bringing together a wide range of experiences and approaches from our diverse membership, in order to spread this knowledge among the wider Jewish community, in a spirit of shared teaching and learning.
13 Different Sessions, plus Lunch and Live Music

Teshuva with Joy!
With the Days of Awe just one month away, Rabbi Zalmy Brackman will show us how we can leave behind our harmful behaviours and do so with joy. Rabbi Brackman, a London native, is the rabbi of Leytonstone and Wanstead Synagogue.
A Parallel History of Artists' Studios and Synagogues in London's East End
The talk will touch on some of Britain's more well-known Jewish artists whose paths crossed in the back streets of Whitechapel, Stepney and Bethnal Green. The aim is to open up discussion on how the migrations of artists and Jewish communities into the further reaches of Hackney, Leytonstone and beyond have impacted on the historical synagogues and artist communities that are left behind. Ruth Solomons is a local artist who also serves as secretary and treasurer of Leytonstone and Wanstead Synagogue.
What Gives Music Its Jewish flavour?
We may know Jewish music when we hear it, but what exactly is it that says to us: "That's Jewish music"? Local musician and artist Odette Rosmarin Gaba will explore this question and offer a possible approach.
Love the Foreigner
Unlike other Biblical commandments, the commandment to love the foreigner appears several times in the Torah. Yadida Gaba will talk about the work she does with Refugees at Home and how easy it can be to change the lives of individuals or families, and Etan Blass will share what it was like to host refugees in his home.
How to Teach Jewishly
How is the art of teaching 'Jewishly' different to teaching in other contexts? How has Jewish education influenced other areas of education? Antony Twyman, vice principal at a high school in east London, will share both Jewish teachings on teaching and his own knowledge and experience as an educator.
The British Mossad
The Special Interrogation Group was a special forces unit made up of German speaking Jews operating behind enemy lines in Egypt from 1940 to 1943. Military historian Philip Holland will give us a window into this fascinating group and their covert operations.
Creating Positive Emotions and Energy
An avid practitioner of yoga and meditation, Barry Graham will show us how some of the ideas in these popular practices can be meaningful in a Jewish context.
Judaica: Like You've Never Seen It
Candlesticks, menorahs, rimonim, kiddush cups… we've seen and perhaps used many of the beautiful traditional Jewish objects made of precious metals. But one of London's most prominent jewellers will introduce these items to us and give us an insight into how they are made, as well as how to judge their authenticity. Local jeweller Sammy Ebrahimoff's customers have included the Queen and Leytonstone native David Beckham.
How I've Attended the Same Shul for Over 85 Years and Stayed Sane
Like any family, shuls can get pretty tense, political and territorial sometimes. We will interview our beloved president Stanley Cirsch to find out how he has managed the incredible feat of remaining with the shul since 1933. We'll also learn a great deal about the rich history of the Jewish community in this area from this Leyton native. Other longtime East Londoners will be welcome to share as well.
Poetry: A Jewish Perspective
Local poetess Ros Kane, whose poems added greatly to our shul walk to Stamford Hill, will be back once again to share some of her meaningful poetry. She also will discuss the connection between her poetry and her Jewishness and will give us some hints on the process she follows when formulating her spoken/written art.
Who Are India's Jews, and What Are Their Customs?
Jews have a long and deep history in India, yet their history and traditions are relatively unknown to most other Jews. Two Indian Jews will discuss the rich history and traditions of the Jews of India. Yeshurun Judah is one of many of London’s jews who were born in India; he will be sharing some of his family history and traditions.
Me and My Jewishness: It's Complicated
When David was a young child, he thought he was Christian. Since discovering he was Jewish, his relationship with his Jewishness has been complicated and is ever-evolving, a feeling with which many of us can probably relate. David will describe the windy road his Jewish connection has followed to this point, and others who can relate will have the opportunity to share their own story. Dr David Pinkerton lectures in dentistry at Queen Mary University.
Talmudic Logic and Quantum Mechanics
These are two subjects one would think have nothing in common. However, Yakov will demonstrate with highly entertaining scenarios from the Talmud how quantum uncertainty may be used to explain the Talmud's approach in these cases. Yakov Korer teaches high school mathematics and leads frequent discussions at the shul on Jewish-related topics. He walks to the shul every Shabbos from Stamford Hill.
